Okay, so dub step is usually more hilarious than music, but I dare you to try getting the melody from this one out of your head:

I'm With You
Who doesn't love new Chili Peppers?? Most of the album is just okay (by their lofty standards). If Rob reviewed it, he would say there were lots of Lines but not many Hooks or Sinkers. But some songs definitely completely rock, and this is one of them:

Med School...
Obviously I have to have my priorities and this blog is not high on the list. That said music is still important to me so I will try to make an effort to post once a week instead of 5. We'll see how it goes...

Jimmy Eat World
I feel obligated to post this after going to the concert last week. So, I hate to say this, but it may have been the worst concert I have ever been to. I say this for not the normal reasons... Did they play their singles? Yes. Did they sound good? Yes.
Normally this would mean a pretty rockin' concert, but Jimmy played a few mean tricks on me.
1. They made me well aware they are in their 16th year as a band and were frankly kind of bored. I never want to go to a concert and realize that this is just 4 dudes job even though I know its true. I am paying you to put up a facade of enthusiasm and love of your music and tell me that this is the best audience on this tour yet. Or even better, actually like what you are doing.
2. The set list SUCKED! You are supposed to play a bunch of fun fast songs and then let us up for air with a slow emo one, not play 4 slow emo ones in a row. I wanted to go to sleep half way through the show.
Well on to the music, their "new" album is standard Jimmy fair. Some clasics and some where they explore a little. The one that stood out for me in the show and on the album is Action Needs An Audience where their lead guitarist is actually singing the vocals. I hope Jimmy finds their way again because it is going to take a lot of convincing to go to another show.

Album: Invented
Hook: Action Needs An Audience
Line: Coffee And Cigarettes (decent live version, also check out the bangs)

I wanted this whole album to be good so badly. "Queen of Hearts" meets all the requirements of a female lead, angsty, belting pop-punk song. I just wish there was more of it.

Silent Disco
Roommate went to this cool thing last weekend called Silent Disco, a dance party where they hand you headphones on the way in; there are no speakers in the room. So everyone looks like they are grooving to nothing...until you throw the headphones on. Awesome concept. No, the story is not related to the posted song.

Yeah, everyone is talking about it. So why not post it, I mean it is solid and it is noise. Alex, you can burn me at the stake for this one. Yes, it's Ben Folds. Yes, it's a cappella. But whatever it's awesome. It Has Been A While
Sorry, my work computer was down. For some reason I only like blogging from it. I guess I'll have to get over that habit eventually. Anyway, I think this is one of the best songs I have heard in a while... It's off of the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World soundtrack. While watching the movie, one of the bands plays this and I thought it sounded a lot like Metric. Sure enough is it Canadian Emily Haines belting out those OOooooOOOooooos.

Oldies/Goodies
So I haven't been listening to as much new music because my mom gifted me a couple of her old records. The gem of the two was the Beatles hits from 67-70; I had no idea all these awesome songs were written in 3 years. Below is one of my favorites I wasn't familiar with previously. A music snob may think, Alex, how could you not know every song on that album, and then laugh at me. But like the fool on the hill, I will laugh back, because I still get to hear them all with new ears.
Here is another favorite from one of the ones she gave me. This is one of those songs that somehow only has the same effect on an old record, with all the pops and crackles:
This song pissed me off twice
First it made me mad that I liked it and that I was forced to post it. Which then meant that you would make fun of me.
THEN, I go and look for a video of it and see that iPod used it in a commercial FML.
Whatever, listen and like it.

Solid Noise
After a while with the new RA album, I think the blog title says it all; a really solid album. It got a lot of bad reviews, but I think it is great because there are a lot fewer singles and the songs sit with you longer in my opinion.
Laugh Now, Laugh Later
Okay, so there's nothing actually new about the new song, but why mess around? Check the link after the picture to listen.

So I got a leaked copy of the album a few days ago and bought the real thing today (I try to support artists I like) and while I wanted this post to be full of ALL CAPS and tons of exclamation points!!!! Oh hey, High School (in a good way)
Remember high school when every time you turned the corner there would be a good new melodic-skatepunk band on Epitaph? Well, that hasn't happened for a long time...until Heartsounds! See below for a song from their first album. They are currently working on their second, produced by none other than Mr. Brett Religion...Win!
New Rise Against!
They kind of tried combining "Savior" with every song from "Siren Song" for this one; while it doesn't win any awards, it certainly isn't losing, either.

Snow Day (At Work)
The worst (or one of the) part(s) of working for a cancer institute is their "commitment to their patients". Which means every morning that there is a snow storm you get a nice email from the president of the hospital saying, "You are an essential employee and as part of your commitment to patients you are required to come into work". While I don't mind coming into work, it is the fact that they remind us that we HAVE to every time it snows. I want an email that says, "HEY!!!! Thanks for being awesome and coming in on this snow day. At lunch the cafeteria will have free hot chocolate for all the employees". That would be a much better email...
Tuesday means new albums, here is a four-star-er. Kind of airy, kind of like a lot of other bands (see: interpol), kind of not bad.

Album: Young The Giant
Hook: I Got

New(ish)
Getting off of my rap kick, I thought some Alkaline Trio would be appropriate to head into the weekend. Sure these are their 2008 and 2010 albums, and sure they sound the same as their first album in 1998, buts that's what we like about this Illinois band.
I love the rif in "Kick Rocks" but the middle gets a little washed out with the chorus.
Artist: Alkaline Trio
Album(s): This Addiction and Agony And Irony
Hook: Kick Rocks
Line: Calling All Skeletons
Sinker: I Found A Way (give this one a chance to get going)

Going To Space
It's starting to look like a week of rap and hip-hop posts for me, I guess my music chi is rebounding from all the girl pop I subjected you to last week.
Not sure what to call this album, a mix tape/compilation/experiment. The tracks are as varied as the artists in them; from E-40 to George Clinton or Method Man to Lykke Li. You name it, it's probably in there.

Tech N9ne
Tech N9ne was kind enough to drop a new album/mixtape yesterday to help us get through the week. The new album isn't quite as hard as his old stuff, but still supports my assertion that he is one of the best rappers out there right now.

The French Kings
While looking through the blog archives I stumbled upon a comment made back in September. It was from Martin Bonventre... he was the Ratatat keyboard player that I thought was so awesome, it was a quick note to inform me of his new project. Thinking this was spam, I was warry of following the link. Finally after doing my own research and ending up at the link through my own route I accepted it was legit. The result was a free album of some pretty solid stuff. You can definitely feel the influence of touring with Ratatat (couldn't figure out if in fact it was either Mike or Evan shredding). It also has elements of Mars Volta, but without the 11 minute long songs and 8 minute breakdowns. Enjoy (link for the album is at the bottom)
(PS Sorry about the crappy youtube quality, I am still new to putting music on youtube, DL the album)

December in January
While like some of their earlier stuff (maybe 4 stars in iTunes), I'm excited to report there are a few 5 stars on this new album. I think they are finally mainstreaming a little, which is not a bad thing. Sure they may lose a little bit of their hipster cred, but it works.

Hook: Down By The Water

Ratatat Recap
Looking back I noticed that I only posted on LP3 and Remixes. I wont go back to pre LP3 stuff, but a lot has happened since. I know these are probably familiar by now, but I'm throwing them up to make sure they haven't been missed. The LP4 songs are a little less accessible than LP3, but listen to it a few times and it's so much better. The two songs I listed aren't the singles, but have amazing crescendos and are the ones I come back to when I listed to it.
Artist: Ratatat
Album: LP4 and Collaborations
Hook: Sunblocks (1:19 in...)

Props to Tyler
One day I came across a CD at the record store that had Tyler Parkford's name on it...yeah, the Tyler from High School! Fun Fact: his band features the 'Queens of the Stoneage' bassist. Check out this sweet song from Mini Mansions' debut album:
100 (not sure this is worthy...)

The next post is 100
Is it going to be me or you Rob?
This song is sweet; my roommate likes it, and it is easy to see why. Watch the video! Even if the song sucked, it would be worth it just to see Ronald McDonald walking out of In N Out 2/3 of the way through it; check it out for sure. Finally, gotta love the girl's tat with the CA outline and the Bear...it is in you whether you like it or not, Rob. Happy Friday!

Friday is for singles
Here are two from one of my favorite bands The Action Desgin. Both are singles off of their own albums. Hopefully this is indicative of a full length LP soon...

Some Bass From The Ammo Box
I'm kinda fried and am too lazy to find something super fresh and I don't think I have posted this before. Its kinda a shot out to Webb dance techno days. Its pretty good stuff to work out. The Swedish versions are always better. The songs suck when they are in English.
